New materials

Developments in new materials are being made continually forging new boundaries in material properties and behavior. Gels and foams, including foamed metals, all offer designers exciting design opportunities. Nanotechnology, for example, is concerned with manipulating atoms and molecules on a scale of 100 nanometers (about 1/1,000 millimeter) or smaller to make new materials or devices within that size range. Applications include bespoke molecules in sunscreens to block out harmful rays, small motors and fans inside electronic circuits, and carbon nanotubes that have mechanical properties that are many thousand times greater than that of steel.

Composites are combinations of materials that can occur naturally but can also be explored to generate new materials with new properties. Aramid fibers used in combination with carbon and glass fibers and an epoxy resin for example are light and strong, and the trade marked example of Kevlar is five times stronger than steel. These composites are used race cars, helicopter rotor blades, sporting products, car tires and body armor. GLAss-REinforced Fiber Metal Laminate (GLARE) is another type of composite, a material composed of very thin layers of metal such as aluminum interspersed with layers of glass-fiber bonded with an epoxy matrix. Although it is a composite with lay-up options that can be matched against stress points, it is constructed using conventional metalwork techniques and is used, for example, in the manufacture of the Airbus A380.
